NAB Future ATM: Hackathon Concept

The future of banking is easy.

Role
Principal Designer
Scope
Internal hackathon concept, 2016

Design goals

  • A withdrawal in 12 seconds instead of 120: choose, tap, go
  • Card-free, using the tap-to-pay habit customers already have
  • Accessible by design: braille controls, directional speakers, high-contrast type
  • Voice controls in ten languages

1. Choose

Take away all the standard barriers of an ATM, and you are left with two choices

The ATM concept at rest: a tall black slab with the NAB logo and a single dark ring offering two choices, twenty or fifty dollars

2. Tap

Tapping to pay has been widely adopted, and is preferred

The ATM concept mid-transaction: fifty dollars selected and filled white, with the prompt 'Tap!' and a contactless symbol below
A hand holding a red NAB Visa card with its contactless symbol facing out

3. Go!

Banking, 10x faster. 10x easier. Let's turn 120 seconds into 12 seconds.

The ATM concept on completion: a green tick inside the ring above the word 'Thanks!', with banknotes emerging from the slot

Accessibility built in.

The accessibility layer of the ATM screen, showing braille embossed under every control and the touch targets outlined in blue and green

The ATM concept's language screen, greeting the customer in ten languages at once including Hindi, Russian, Japanese, Korean and Greek

A friendlier experience.

Conceptual only. Please note, this was created as a concept for an internal hackathon in 2016, and is not indicative of NAB's planned ATM development, past or present.
